A recent study conducted by the American Management Association revealed that 51% of companies have yet to develop a crisis/disaster plan. The tragic events of 9/11 demonstrate more than ever that preparing for a ‘worse case’ scenario should be developed by all businesses because so many businesses were affected by the terrorist attack. For example, how would your business recover from an explosion in your headquarters that killed most of your workforce? Some businesses on 9/11 discovered this the hard way.
These questions are not easy to ask nor should they, but it is better to be prepared and have a developed a crisis management plan and not need it than it would be not to have a crisis management plan and need one. Unfortunately, being in the midst of a major disaster of one kind or another is not a place to try to develop a crisis management plan.
